Clarence Kugler's Crab Skiff, Deal's Island
Plan by Josef W. Liener

What you couldn't find by googling
When it was time to build another crabbing skiff, I was looking at the Smith Island double-ender – Figure 1 in Chapelle's Chesapeake Bay Crabbing Skiffs. I wanted more information about its history and construction details. But when I googled it, nothing came up. Zero.
About the same time, I happened upon the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (CBMM) online search. I tried it for Smith Island crabbing skiffs and immediately found what I was looking for:

Smith Island Skiff
1940, Deal's Island
[ CBMM Cat. No. 0000.0901.0272 ]

Smith Island Skiff
Plan by Howard Chapelle
[ CBMM Cat. No. 1994.0027.0099.00 ]
But to find this from the start, you first had to know that CBMM exists, and that you can search its collection online. You could not get to this by googling.
I was excited by what I found with CBMM online search. Then a little obsessed. I wanted to turn this into data to assist my own amateur research and writing about sailing workboats. I selected plans and photos of boats under 30 feet and copied over 400 CBMM online records into an Excel table. Then I categorized them so I can filter by CBMM item type, workboat type, size, year built, or builder.
CBMM gave me permission to publish the results here. So you can google them at last.
If you're viewing on your phone, scroll right to see the item descriptions.

Chapelle played a pivotal role in collecting and documenting designs of vernacular American watercraft. In 1943, he published a two-part article titled “Chesapeake Bay Crabbing Skiffs” in Yachting magazine, which remains the standard reference on the subject. This drawing of a 17-foot trotline skiff used for crabbing at Taylor’s Island was prepared for that publication. Chapelle noted that except for an unusual miniature knighthead just behind the stem for a small anchor line, this skiff was otherwise a typical example of boats used in that region. |
