| 1878-02-18 | The Baltimore Sun | LOCAL MATTERS. Death of Capt. Conroy.—The jury of Dr. Walker, coroner, in the case of Andrew Conroy, of the oyster pungy Maid of Erin, who died at the City Hospital last night, heard testimony at the middle house on Saturday. Dr. Preston, who held a post mortem, gave his statement of the cause of the bullet wound. He showed a section of the backbone, with the ball still remaining in it, and said death was caused by paralysis induced by the wound. Messrs. John Kelly, M. J. Flaherty, Thos. McDonald, Welsh, and Patrick Conway, of the crew of the Maid of Erin, testified substantially to the same effect as heretofore published in connection with this matter. On the morning of January 16 the oyster police sloop Nannie Merry, Capt. Lemuel J. Mitchell, came around Thomas's Point and gave chase to the pungy Maid of Erin. A fire was opened from the sloop, and a bullet struck Capt. Conroy, who was at the helm of his vessel. The Maid of Erin was overhauled, and a brother of Capt. Mitchell, with a gun in his hand, first came alongside.—Shots were fired one at a time, and the one which struck Conroy was said to have been de- liberately aimed. Patrick Greylach and John Keaney, both of the crew of the Maid of Erin, but could not identify the man who fired the shot. The jury returned a verdict that Capt. Conroy came to his death by reason of a wound caused by a ball from a gun fired from on board the Maryland oyster police boat Nannie Merry, Capt. L. J. Mitchell, commanding, January 16, 1878, about 8 A. M., off Thomas's Point. | ![]() Open high-resolution article image Open captured viewer image Open Newspapers.com viewer (Newspapers.com login required) |

| 1907-11-25 | The Baltimore Sun | **FOUL PLAY STILL SUSPECTED IN CASE** **Of Drowned Sailors.** The bodies of Daniel Cronin and Patrick Coffey, of New York, who were drowned a week ago from the oyster pungy Maid of Erin, have not yet been recovered and search for them has been abandoned. Members of the Canton police force dragged for the bodies several times, but their efforts were of no avail, and they requested Deputy Marshal Manning, of the City Police Department, to assist them in the search for the bodies. Lieutenant League was detailed with the boat Lannan to drag for the bodies of the drowned men, but he also failed to find them. Lieutenant League said that he thoroughly searched the vicinity where they were drowned, and felt that it was time lost to devote any more energy to drag for the bodies. He said that in all probability the bodies of the men had been washed into the channel and could not be found. However, they may come to the surface in time. The cries heard the night they were drowned by a number of persons at Girt House and Levy's roadhouse, and as by fishermen and persons engaged at work at No. 3 elevator, it is felt that the two men met with foul play. Patrolman "Gus" Knitter, who escaped from the pungy the night following his arrest, despite the efforts of the Canton and county police. The Sun received a communication from Baltimore last night which comments on the lack of interest by the police in recovering the bodies so that a post mortem may be performed. The communication states: "These two men left New York three weeks ago will certainly be a recall that on several occasions a gentleman and who was bring- ing them to Baltimore, attempted to start a fight with the unfortunates. "It seems that the truth is being disregarded and the ones who should act in this case are obviously negligent. The parties, if these men met with foul play, should be found and rigidly handled." The captain of the pungy, Andrew Steldle, of 121 North Rose street, and the other members of the crew who were on board the pungy the night the two men were drowned were arrested at the time and underwent a sweating by Magistrate Thompson and Patrolman Cotter, but the crew stated that they were all asleep from the captain down and knew nothing of the drowning of the men. | ![]() Open high-resolution article image Open captured viewer image Open Newspapers.com viewer (Newspapers.com login required) |
| 1907-11-21 | The Baltimore Sun | NOVEMBER 21, 1907. VESSEL'S MEN RELEASED. Magistrate Thinks He Has Not Enough Evidence. WITNESSES TELL OF SHRIEKS Two Men Are Supposed To Have Drowned And Mate Has Disappeared. The crew of the oyster pungy Maid of Erin, from which two oystermen were drowned Sunday night, were arrested yes- terday by Patrolman Cotter and given a hearing before Justice Thompson last night at the Canton Police Station. Despite the fact that at least a dozen witnesses testi- fied that they heard cries of "Murder!" "Help!" and "For God's sake, don't do that again!" all the members of the crew who were aboard the vessel when the men were drowned stated that they did not hear the cries. As no statement from any of the men who were aboard the vessel could be obtained like a brawl occurred on the ves- sel Sunday night, Magistrate Thompson dismissed the men. However, Charles Han- son, the owner of the Maid of Erin, was present at the hearing, and said that he would keep the police in touch with the movements of the vessel, should they want the men again. "Gus" Knitter, the mate, who mysteri- ously disappeared from the pungy Monday after returning to the vessel when picked up by the police, had not been lo- cated up to a late hour last night. From the testimony it appears that Knit- ter was the only man who was on deck with Daniel Cronin, the man who is said to have been drowned after 10 o'clock. Knitter said he carried him from the cabin to the deck, where he left him lying near the hatch. The police of Canton and Eastern district have been on the look- for him, and search was made for him yesterday and last night along the water front. Said All Hands Were Drunk. Capt. Andrew Steidle was the first wit- ness called. He said he dropped anchor off the Canton elevator about 5 P. M. Sun- day. Supper, he said, was immediately after which he turned in for the crew had been drinking heavily from time they left Federal flats that after- noon, and when anchor was cast all hands were nearly drunk. The other members of the crew were somewhat reticent when questioned by the police. They all said they were drunk and turned into their bunks about 6 P. M. which persons heard at the Can- ton elevator and the shore a mile away, declare were not heard by any of the men. There is only one exception, and that is Michael Barry. Barry said that he hap- pened on deck after 6 o'clock and heard faint cries. He said he ran to the hatch and told Mate Knitter there was a man overboard. The mate, he said, tried to save Patrick Coffey, who, he declared, was drowning. None of the other men having any recollection of seeing an after the vessel anchored in Canton. Those who were arrested are Capt. An- drew Steidle, 121 North Rose street; Cook Brown, of New York; Frank Owens, of Covington, Ky.; Michael Barry and Pat- rick O'Brien, of South River, N. J. Heard Cries For Help. The most important witness at the hear- ing was Mr. William J. Ahern, a watch- man at the elevator. Mr. Ahern said that about 6.30, when he was making his rounds, his attention was suddenly attracted by loud cries. "I distinctly heard a voice cry 'Murder!' 'Help!' and 'For God's sake, don't do that again!' " he testified. "I heard someone shout 'Shut your mouth, you —!' Coroner Thompson, of Canton, believes that the body found floating in the Patapsco river at Whitten's wharf yesterday morn-ing is that of Patrick Coffey, who disap-peared from the pungy Maid of Erin, a member of the crew. | 1904-03-05 | Democratic Messenger | Dredge Boats Ashore. Easton, Md., Feb. 28.—During the high northwest winds this week, three dredge boats were driven upon the shores of Poplar Island. A sloop, the Lizzie Lane, was run upon the North Point bar in about two feet of water; a pungy, the Maid of Erin, was sent ashore on the back of the island in about four feet of water, while the other vessel, the Patrick McCabe, was sent high and al-most dry upon a bar on the southern end of the island. At one time they were in great danger of the ice (which being driven by a heavy current) crushing them. Later the Maid of Erin and the Lizzie Lane were carried off the bars out into the river. | ![]() Open high-resolution article image Open captured viewer image Open Newspapers.com viewer (Newspapers.com login required) |

| 1907-12-10 | The Baltimore Sun | **BODY OF OYSTERMAN FOUND** **That Of Oysterman Has Not Been Recovered.** What is believed to be the body of Daniel Cronin, of New York, one of the oystermen drowned off the schooner Maid of Erin last month, was found floating in the Patapsco river, off Canton Elevator No. 3, yesterday afternoon by "Admiral" Duffy, marine reporter of THE SUN, in command of the Sunbeam. The body was tied at the elevator. Canton police notified. Marshal German and took the body to the be held until relatives. Cronin and another oysterman, Patrick Coffey, were drowned the night of November 7. The circumstances were somewhat unable to fathom. Magistrate Thompson put all the members of the crew through a severe cross-examination. All but one of the men said that they knew nothing of the drowning. The mate, "Gus" Knitter, who was arrested by Patrolman Cotter, said that he tried to save him. Knitter was released from the schooner. Nothing more has been heard from him, although the Canton police tried to find him. Coroner Thompson found the body of Cronin badly decomposed, but as far as he could ascertain there were no marks of violence on it. The body of Coffey has not been recovered. | ![]() Open high-resolution article image Open captured viewer image Open Newspapers.com viewer (Newspapers.com login required) |

| 1878-01-19 | The Baltimore Sun | **LOCAL MATTERS.** **Meeting of Ostermen.**—A meeting of owners and captains of oyster-dredging vessels was held last night at Raine's Hall, William H. Thompson, chairman, Wm. J. Kelly, secretary and treasurer, to take action in reference to the shooting of Capt. Andrew Conroy, on the Maid of Erin, by Captain Lemuel Mitchell, of the oyster police sloop Nannie man. The chairman said Conroy, a citizen, had been wounded by Mitchell because, as alleged, the former was dredging for oysters inside of an oyster line. The act was committed with shadow of resistance by Conroy. Mitchell last year committed a similar act in Kent county, when Wm. Stewart was killed on an vessel. The meeting was called to ex- indignation against such unlawful pro- and to devise means by which lives of can be protected, also to demand that will be brought to justice. LOCAL REPORT, JANUARY 18, 1878, BALTIMORE. Kelly said Mitchell is not in the hands of the Governor, but the case rests with the State's Attorney of Anne Arundel. Mr. A. L. McClure, counsel of the oyster men, related the facts connected with the per- emptory dismissal of Capt. Mitchell by the com- missioners, and assured the meeting that Mitchell would not be allowed to remain on the police sloop. He is bailed in $1,000 for the grand jury, and if Conroy dies will be rearrested. The case is now entirely with the State to prosecute the law. He advised the committee to see that Mitchell was properly prosecuted, and also to determine as citizens what legislation ought to be enacted relative to oyster dredging. He said there was a decided feeling in the Legisla- ture to have all the waters of the Chesapeake free to oystermen. He said it is neither sense nor justice that three little outside jumps in Arundel should be set apart for the tongs. No such privilege is granted in other counties. Another meeting to arrange for prosecu- ting Captain Mitchell was fixed for next week. A resolution of thanks was adopted to Hon. M. McLane and the whole Baltimore legis- lative delegation for their prompt action in de- manding the dismissal of Captain Mitchell from the oyster police force. | ![]() Open high-resolution article image Open captured viewer image Open Newspapers.com viewer (Newspapers.com login required) |
| 1878-01-18 | The Baltimore Sun | Shooting of Capt. Andrew Conroy. [Reported for the Baltimore Sun.] The full Baltimore city delegation, in the Maryland Legislature, headed by the three Senators, waited upon Governor Carroll at Annapolis yesterday, to protest against the violence of Capt. Lemuel Mitchell, commander of the oyster police schooner Nannie Merryman, who shots from whose vessel sometime ago caused the death of Brokey Bill, of Baltimore, and Wednesday mortally wounded Andrew Conroy, also an oysterman, of Baltimore city. A great deal of indignation has been expressed in the Legislature on account of the violent use of fire-arms by the oyster police force, and especially by Capt. Mitchell. The members of the Baltimore city delegation went to the Governor with the determination to demand the instantaneous removal of Mitchell, and that the law should take its course with him as with any other person charged with its violation. Whereas Lemuel Mitchell, Deputy Commander of the State Fishery Force, and commander of the oyster sloop Nannie Merryman, fatally wounded Andrew Conroy, of the dredging schooner Maid of Erin, on the morning of January 16, 1878; And whereas there are scores of witnesses who have solemnly declared that such fatal wounding was unnecessary and cruel, as the said Andrew Conroy and his vessel could easily have been captured without firing into her, as she was at the time sailing into West river, followed by Captain Mitchell in the said sloop Nannie Merryman. And whereas the said schooner Maid of Erin was fired into by said Mitchell and his crew of the said sloop, together with "guests" who were on said sloop at the instance of the said Mitchell, when he knew that but one man on said schooner could be guilty of any violation of the oyster law, even if he were guilty. And whereas there was a crew of seven men on board the said schooner when she was fired into as aforesaid, by the said Mitchell, none of whom were guilty, as the crew of a vessel commit no offense, under the law, when the vessel is illegally dredging. And whereas such firing was reckless in the extreme, and under the circumstances will be murder. And whereas it was intentionally and maliciously done by the said Mitchell and his crew after the commissioners of the State Fishery Force had demanded the resignation of the said Mitchell for recklessly firing into and killing William Stewart, a hand on board of the schooner "Two Brothers," (and an innocent man under the law,) in Chester river, in October, 1877. And whereas it is learned that the said Lemuel Mitchell has tendered his resignation, but not to take effect until May 1, 1878; be it therefore Resolved, by the Ostermen in Convention That the Commissioners of the State Fishery Force be respectfully but earnestly requested to remove the said Lemuel Mitchell from office at once, and that a committee be appointed to present this resolution to the said commissioners. Capt. Mitchell, after arriving at Annapolis with the wounded man Conroy, on Wednesday, sent in his resignation, to take effect on the first of May, when his commission expired. This, of itself, was an offense to the board of fishery force, and was one cause of their being called together at the time the city delegation appeared on the scene. The action of the board in and Capt. Mitchell's letter are given officially as follow: Sloop Nannie Merryman, January 15, 1878.—To the Board of State Fishery Force—Gentlemen: Having been reappointed by you in May, 1876, to the command of the oyster sloop Nannie Merryman, for and during the term of two years, I hereby respectfully tender to you my resignation, the same to take effect on and after the first day of May next, being the expiration of the term for which I was appointed. Very respectfully, CAPT. LEMUEL MITCHELL, Commander of the Fifth District. Resolved, That the response of Capt. Lemuel Mitchell to the resolution of this board, passed on the 9th inst., demanding his resignation, is in contempt and defiance of its authority, and this board being clear in the opinion that Capt. Mitchell's acts, both before the passage of said resolution and since his notification thereof, demand his instant removal from the office of deputy commander of the State fishery force. He is hereby removed accordingly, and the commander of the fishery force is directed to take immediate possession of said sloop Nannie Merryman, and retain possession of said sloop until a deputy commander is appointed and commissioned in the place of said Mitchell. Resolved, That the pay of Capt. Mitchell as such deputy commander shall cease from and after the date of his letter in response to said resolution. Capt. Mitchell was before the board and made a very cool statement of the affair. He said he fired three times, and one of his men fired twice. The crew were armed with needle guns, carrying one ounce balls. When asked if he ordered his men to fire he said, "No, they had general orders to fire." Other witnesses say that the distance between the two boats was not more than a hundred yards when Conroy, who was at the tiller, fell [CONTINUATION NOT CAPTURED]. | ![]() Open high-resolution article image Open captured viewer image Open Newspapers.com viewer (Newspapers.com login required) |

| 1907-11-20 | The Baltimore Sun | **DROWNING MYSTERY DEEPENS** **Police Believe Crew Of Schooner Knows More Than Is Told.** The mystery surrounding the drowning of two oystermen Sunday night off the schooner Maid of Erin, lying off of Canton No. 3, deepened last night when Patrolmen Moylan and Pfisterer went aboard the vessel in search of the mate. He had disappeared Monday after being released from the Canton Police Station. Not only has Mate "Gus" Knitter left the vessel, but Peterson Anderson, a deckhand, has also disappeared. The latter is said to have left the vessel yesterday. Knitter got away under cover of night. The Canton police say that his disappearance shows that he knows about the drowning of the two men he told Monday. When questioned by Magistrate Thompson and Patrolman Cbt. Dick Coffey and Daniel Cronin fell over- after the crew had turned in for the night. Members of the crew said last night that they had all been drinking so heavily Sun- afternoon that they could not remem- distinctly anything that happened. Patrolmen Moylan and Pfisterer were sent to the vessel about 1 o'clock last night by Andrew Stenger, a fisherman. He said they did not believe the state- of several of the crew, who said they were not disturbed by cries Sunday night. Residents in the vicinity of the elevator said that from the cries they heard they believed that there was a brawl on the boat, which ended in the two men being drowned. The police boat Lannan will probably drag for the bodies today. | ![]() Open high-resolution article image Open captured viewer image Open Newspapers.com viewer (Newspapers.com login required) |
| 1907-11-19 | The Baltimore Sun | MYSTERY ON SCHOONER Two Dredgers Lose Lives Within Three Hours Of Each Other. CRIES OF "MURDER" HEARD Police Suspect Foul Play — Mate Says Captain Helped Him To Carry One Man To The Deck. Two men were drowned mysteriously at different times Sunday night from the schooner Maid of Erin while off Canton elevator No. 3, and the police of Canton are trying to believe that the men met with foul play. Conflicting statements from members of the crew caused Patrolman Neil Cotter to investigate and he arrested "Gus" Knitter, the mate, and Michael Barry, a boat hand. The two men were taken to the Canton Po- lice Station and closely questioned by Mag- istrate Thompson and Cotter, but they did not materially aid in clearing the mystery. They were later released, the county au- thorities deciding they had no jurisdiction in the case. When Marshal Langhammer was ap- pealed to United States Marshal Lang- hammer said he had no right to hold men, owing to the fact that the drown- ing occurred in Baltimore county waters. Cries For Help Heard. Residents near the elevator tell how, be- tween 6 and 7 P. M. Sunday, they heard cries and screams for help coming from the direction of the Maid of Erin. Two fisher- men, James Clarke and Andrew Stenger, got off in a rowboat and paddled out to the vessel, but upon reaching the vessel were told that there was nothing wrong. A strange feature of the drowning is that one of them is said to have been drowned at 7 o'clock and the other at 10 o'clock. None of the residents in the vicinity of the Sea Girt House heard any unusual noises or cries at 10 o'clock, but all were startled at 6.30 o'clock. Every word called could be distinctly heard by several men at the Girt House and at Levy's roadhouse. At little attention was paid to the cries, but when the men heard shouts of "Mur- der!" "Police!" "For God sake save me!" they ran down the wharf. "Let's jump in a boat and row on a lit- tle way and probably we can find out the trouble," said Mr. Stenger. With him went Mr. Clarke. When they left the boat land- ing they again heard cries of "Save me!" "Hold up as long as' you can. We are going to save you," shouted Mr. Stenger. Told There Was No Trouble. A few minutes later the cries were no longer heard and the two men upon reach- ing the vessel found everything quiet. They were told that nothing was the matter and returned to the Sea Girt House. Others Hear Cries. Mr. Thomas Levy, of Levy's Patapsco Park, said that shortly after 6 o'clock Sun- day night a negro employed by him said he had heard cries of "Murder!" and "Help!" coming from near the Canton ele- vator. "I went out on the front porch," said Mr. Levy, "and distinctly heard cries. Someone was calling 'Help!' and 'Police!' and at times shouting 'Murder!' There were several men about and they also heard the cries." Mr. Benjamin Cooper, barkeeper at Thompson's Sea Girt House, and Mr. Thos. Hennegan, and Mr. Augustus Hennegan, pro- prietor of the resort, also heard the cries. Mr. Cooper said the cries for assistance could be distinctly heard at the Sea Girt House. The Canton police were notified of the occurrence about 10 o'clock yesterday morn- ing by James Knight, 50 Second street, Canton. He is employed at the Canton ele- vator and upon learning that the night watchman employed there had heard the cries on Sunday night he telephoned to the po- lice. Patrolman Carter was assigned to investi- gate.
