| spinsheet.com | Hunting for Sunken Treasure in Back Creek Mattie F. Dean | spinsheet.com | Hunting for Sunken Treasure in Back Creek Mattie F. Dean | When news that the remains of a legendary schooner, the Mattie F. Dean, could be resting at the bottom of Annapolis’s Back Creek, the promise of such a treasure beckoned the Back Creek Conservancy (BCC) to pursue the forgotten relic. Mattie F. Dean was famous for championing several races during her heyday in the late 19th century and was widely renowned as a beautiful boat on the Chesapeake Bay, until the 1950s, when she outlived her life a working oyster boat. Photographic documentation, local lore from historians, and whispered clues about this once majestic vessel lost to time inspired BCC to spearhead the Mattie F. Dean Expedition. Alex Dulude, a full time sonar pilot and senior researcher for the expedition said, “We know that in the 1950s, Back Creek was a dumping ground for old boats and other marine refuse, so we also wanted to see how much of that was left and what kind of concentrations it might be.” The Mattie F. Dean was finally discovered when local historian and marine industry veteran, Fred Hecklinger, pointed the team in the right direction. The boat was found on the eastern shore of the creek in the woods, degraded by the tides and wind, but with feasible remnants of the hull, several intact drift pins, and shell plating. | ![]() Hunting for Sunken Treasure in Back Creek Mattie F. Dean was born in the Dorchester County shipyard of Joseph W. Brooks on Madison Bay, just off the Little Choptank River on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. She was one of the later models Brooks built in his lifetime, using local lumber hewn in the sawmill he built adjacent to the boatyard. Her ironwork came from a Cambridge blacksmith, and her ornate figurehead (a gorgeous woman) was likely carved by an African American simply known by the name Cook, who took on multiple projects for Brooks. The Mattie F. Dean was special in many respects. All of Brooks’s boats stood out on the water with their extensive ornamentation, but the Mattie F. Dean was also fast. She got into the oyster business later in the game, when single-masted sloops and bugeyes were starting to be the preferred workboat, so she soon moved on to running a transportation line up and down the Bay, carrying lumber from Baltimore to Norfolk, and bringing tobacco home on the return trip. In her spare time, she competed in workboat races. For 70 years the Mattie F. Dean was a frequent sighting on the Bay, finding a home in Annapolis when she wasn’t in use. And that’s where she came to be scuttled, in 1954, three years shy of her 70th birthday. | ![]() Issuu Issuu SpinSheet Magazine October 2016 by SpinSheet Publishing Company - Issuu | |

| virginiachronicle.com | virginiachronicle.com | virginiachronicle.com | Kinsale, Va: the last schooner carrying freight on the bay, the Mattie F. Dean, was making her final trips. Built in 1878 and manned often with crew from Kinsale, the Dean worked for nearly 80 years. Museum has photos of her under sail in the 1930s and a 1957 photo of her, lying in her grave on Back Creek outside Annapolis. It also owns a collection of labels from the tomato canneries, symbols of one of the Dean's frequent cargoes up to Baltimore (full cans) and back down (empty cans manufactured in the city, with their newly-printed labels). Other exhibits include a photo of the Lillian Ruth, a Kinsale owned buy boat that carried freight and grain to Baltimore from the 1940s until the 1960s, when she was sold south to help build a hotel in the Bahamas. | No source image identified. | |
