Amanda F. Lewis was a Dorchester-built Chesapeake pungy schooner, built in 1884 by Joseph W. Brooks at Madison. The museum records connect her working identity to the Virginia side of the Chesapeake as well as to Baltimore: Mariners' Museum data gives Coan's Wharf as home port, records her as 67.0 feet long, 22.3 feet in beam, 6.5 feet in depth, and 47 gross tons, while CBMM and Mariners' Museum photographs place her in the hands of Captain G. T. Rice and preserve the shortened form Amanda Lewis alongside the fuller Amanda F. Lewis.1

The curated photographs and drawings show the vessel as both a working craft and a remembered type specimen. CBMM records include a hand-carved model attributed to Captain Rice, photographs of Rice at the wheel, views of the vessel off the Coan River and around Baltimore, Feuchter artwork, and later documentary and plan material. Mariners' Museum records add photographs, inscriptions, and collection data that tie the vessel to G. T. Rice, Madison construction, and later conversion work. Together, the museum records make Amanda F. Lewis one of the better visually documented pungies in this project.2

The newspaper evidence now gives the working vessel a much sharper freight profile. Selected full-page OCR and newly scanned keyword clips show Amanda F. Lewis appearing in Baltimore shipping lists from the late 1880s into the 1920s. The clearest early cargo signals are wood, grain, and wheat: an April 20, 1894 listing reads the vessel with wood; entries from July 1899, July 1900, July 1901, July 1902, July 1905, July 1910, and July 1911 repeatedly place her among grain or wheat movements. A July 29, 1907 clip is especially useful because the human-readable clipping shows Amanda F. Lewis carrying tobacco, adding a distinct Chesapeake agricultural cargo to the pattern.3

By the 1920s, lumber becomes the most visible repeated cargo in the selected clips. OCR from the October 18, 1921 clipping reads Amanda F. Lewis with Rice and a Coan River reference carrying lumber, and additional selected clips in 1925, 1926, and 1929 preserve lumber or likely lumber entries. This newspaper evidence fits the later WoodenBoat description of Amanda F. Lewis unloading lumber at a Pratt Street wharf in Baltimore's Inner Harbor about 1930 and the CBMM image of the pungy at Pier 6, Pratt Street, in November 1933 carrying lumber.4

The periodical record also makes the vessel important beyond her cargo work. WoodenBoat Magazine used her as an example in a broader discussion of Chesapeake pungies, noted that her lines appeared in H. I. Chapelle's Smithsonian watercraft catalog, and preserved details about the light weight and low windage of her rig. The same WoodenBoat article reports that Amanda Lewis capsized and sank off the mouth of the Potomac while hove to with a fishing party below; because this is a reported recollection in a later interpretive article, it should be treated as important but still in need of corroboration from casualty or contemporary newspaper records.5

The late-life record points toward alteration and preservation rather than continued sail freight. Mariners' Museum and CBMM selections place the vessel at Smith's Shipyard on Curtis Creek in 1939 and at Krentz Shipyard in Virginia while being converted to a power boat. Later newspaper and museum references show her persisting as a subject of memory, model-making, artwork, and maritime-history interpretation. The result is a useful arc: a Brooks-built pungy schooner with a long grain, wood, tobacco, and lumber paper trail; an especially strong association with Captain Rice and Coan River; and a substantial afterlife in museum and periodical records.6

Grey deck, light green, red and gilt trailboard with vessel's name. Eagle head figurehead. Light green and gilt stern carving with female portrait, painted in gilt letters, Coan, Va. 2 masted. appropriate deck fittings. MODEL NOTES: The pungy was an outgrowth of the famous Baltimore clipper type and first appeared on the Chesapeake Bay around the 1840s. Its point of maximum beam was farther forward than on most Chesapeake schooners of that era, and its bottom had more deadrise and its ends more rake. Log rails were used instead of bulwarks, and there was no centerboard. There was a fairly distinctive style of painting and colors, as depicted on the model. The type is now extinct on the Bay. The name is believed to derive from the Pungoteague area of Virginia's eastern shore ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: For complete vessel history, see Burgess, Robert H, article in "The Tiller," June 1947, pp. 3-4.
