Nick Bletsch led the effort to have Phillips Library of the Peabody Essex Museum scan their collection of Messing About In Boats magazine issues.  Nick then arranged for MAIB creator and editor, the late Bob Hicks, to provide permission and missing issues. (Read more here.)

Chuck Leinweber, the founder of Duckworks, then created a successful GoFundMe campaign to raise the $5000 required to scan and publish.  The entire MAIB collection is now digitized and offered online for anyone to freely download.  (Read more here.)

You can browse MAIB issues by year, volume, and number here.

This search page is built from my index of the MAIB archive.  Search results include links to issues in the online archive  here.

Search tips:

  • Use quotes to search phrases like
    ‘chesapeake bay’
    “crabbing skiff”
  • Each search result has a link to the Messing About in Boats issue (PDF) that you can download.  (Note:  Some of the PDF files are 40 MB in size and will take longer to download if your Internet connection is slow.)
  • Year(s) examples: 1994, 2000-2012
  • You can change the Snippet Size before or after you see results.
  • Copy to Table copies a results table to your Clipboard. You can then paste the well-formatted table into Gmail, a Word doc, or other apps.
  • Export to CSV sends the results to a file you can use with Excel or Google Sheets.
