Plans, Photos, and Models of Flattie Skiffs

in the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum Collection

“Flattie” is a name generally used to refer to a flat-bottom or flatiron sailing skiff.  But for watermen of the Chesapeake Bay, the flattie was a crabbing or oystering skiff with a flat bottom forward and a v-bottom aft.  It seems likely that on the Chesapeake, the flattie evolved from the flatiron skiff or sharpie and later developed into the deadrise skiff (v-bottom fore and aft).  Chapelle noted, however, that the stick-up flattie remained popular on the Eastern Shore until all sailing skiffs were replaced by gas-powered workboat.

Below is a list of all results found when searching for “flattie” in the online database of the CBMM Collections.

I published this list because contents of the CBMM database are not visible to search engines.  As a result, these historic items that describe Eastern Shore sailing workboats can only be discovered if you already know how to find and use the CBMM Collections database.  The database contents here can be discovered with web search engines.

Title: M. V. Brewington Collection: 1930s-1950s
Artist/Maker:
Catalog Description: [bio omitted] [no ref to flattie]
Scope and ContentThe collection represents Brewington’s research methods. The range and type of material reflects the author’s meticulous search for details regarding all aspects of the Chesapeake Bay’s vernacular watercraft and shipping. The majority of information was collected during the period 1930-1950, though some documents exceed this date. Many of the documents, newspaper abstracts, and notes examine general information regarding eighteenth- and nineteenth-century shipbuilding and maritime commerce. Most of the correspondence deals specifically with information regarding late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Chesapeake Bay vessels. The ship plans preserve specific designs of Chesapeake Bay related watercraft. Subject: Marion V Brewington
